Winter Bliss: The Winter Guide To Happy, Busy Dogs.

It’s winter friends! As the chilly months set in, we are all looking to find ways to keep our dogs entertained and mentally stimulated, especially when outdoor activities are limited. One dog mom pro- tip is to utilize the toys we may have on hand or investing in a few engaging dog toys to help beat that winter boredom. Not sure where to begin? Let’s explore some ideas of what to buy for your pup or how to use the fun toys hanging out in your dog’s toy basket.

  1. Puzzle Toys

Interactive toys, such as puzzle feeders, are excellent to keep your pups mind active! They help promote cognitive development and problem-solving skills. Puzzle feeders are perfect for all shapes and sizes and best of all, you can choose the level that your dog needs to be the most beneficial to them.

  2. Treat Dispensing Toys

Treat dispensing toys serve a dual purpose by combining mental stimulation with a tasty reward- a double win! Dogs love the thrill of working to release their tasty treat, turning meal time or snack time into a playful and rewarding experience. (I especially love the treat toys that I can pop in the dishwasher!)

  3. Plush Toys

Do you have a dog that carries around their plushie toys? Plush toys definitely offer more than we give them credit for. They for sure make our dogs happy with their squeaks and crinkles, but did you realize that they are a great source of comfort to our furry besties? Dogs often form a strong bond with their plush toys, and this emotional connection can also add an extra layer to their playtime or even when resting. So how we do use this toy to the maximum potential? Engaging your pup with a gentle game of fetch with their fav plushie, offers a healthy outlet for their energy and is an enjoyable way for them to express their playful nature with you.

  4. Tough Toys

For doggos with a lot of chewing energy, durable tough toys are a must have. Tough toys are often made with enthusiastic chewing in mind and often you will find them made of heavy-duty rubber, nylon, or reinforced fabrics. Sometimes, a spirited chewer is a challenge for us dog mamas…let’s be honest friends. :) But our sweet chewers can’t always help themselves. Chewing is an innate behavoir, rooted in their instinct to explore and interact with their environment. (This makes total sense for those of us that have experienced life with a puppy.) Chewing also provides stress relief, helping them relax, alleviate anxiety and boredom. Playtime with tough toys also allows them to explore different textures, enhancing their sensory experiences. Another great thing to remember, is that when your pup is busy with their tough toys, they are fostering their independence and self soothing abilities. My dog mom bestie likes to set her pup up with his favorite chewing toys while she is making dinner or doing other chores.

  5. Snuffle Mats

Snuffle mats are a super fun activity for dogs and pawrents during the cold days of winter. I love to watch my pup work to find all the treasures waiting for him. I also have to admit that I equally enjoy setting up his mat, knowing how excited he will be for this hide and seek activity. Snuffle mats are also more than just a fun experience.. This type of toy can provide beneficial enrichment for dogs in all seasons of life, even senior dogs or dogs that need to spend more time indoors. Additionally, mats foster problem solving skills and help with mental agility…so many good reasons why a snuffle mat is a great investment!

So friend, enjoy this slight pause from your outdoor adventures and remember that winter doesn’t have to be a dull season- with the right toys, it can be days filled with tail-wagging fun. We can’t wait to hear about your winter play time adventures!
